My philosophy of web design
September 22, 2007
I have done lots of things over the years, as you can see from my bio. When I look to see what is in common with them, I see the thread of communication weaving through them. I have always wanted to help others communicate.
So, now, as a web designer, I focus on communication. I want to help my clients create a site that communicates their business or pursuit effectively, succinctly and clearly. This means that there are not tons of distracting bells and whistles on my sites.
I remember when I used to be a software trainer and I taught classes on Powerpoint. I always told people to work on the content of their presentations before making them “pretty”. Who cares how the slides flip, checker or animate if the presentation is boring or hard to understand. I think we’ve all been to presentation where we wished the presenter had spent some more time focusing on content.
So, with web sites, I want the client’s message to come across, not the website. I want the visitor to be left with the business. My dad always said that if you leave a movie and the first thing you think about is how good the actors were, it wasn’t a good movie. So, my goal is to make sites that communicate the client’s business.
