A book that helped me be a better networker
September 22, 2007
I just read the book, Netweaving, by Bob Litell and enjoyed it. I believe, as do most people, from a spiritual perspective that I want to be someone who does good in the world. Who makes the world a better place. Sometimes that seems difficult to carry into networking for my business. I mean, it’s not that I go around trying to hurt people, it’s just that in the world of networking, of marketing my business, sometime I have been a little too focused on my needs and wants.
This book reminds us and gives a structure for networking from a perspective of helping others, connecting them with the best resources for them that you can and basically trusting that your own business will thrive.
It really helped me this week at a NAWBO(National Association of Women Business Owners) luncheon. Mostly because it gave me a good way to follow up with new people that I meet who I apparently have nothing in common with. It also helped me in my conversations. Rather than just talking about my business, which is pretty easy to explain, “Hi, I’m a web designer.” I asked them about theirs and what they needed.
I met a few entrepreneurs who will hopefully check out my hubby’s site, Startup Lounge, as well as a variety of other people.
So anyway, the principles of Netweaving, are not shocking or new, but the book reminded me to focus on others and be generous and gave me some additional structure for doing that.
