Judge gets creative and reminds us of our elementary school rules

September 21, 2009

I put together a list of the top rules for elementary school children. I think that if all people followed these rules the world would be a much nicer place to live in:

  1. Be respectful of yourself and others.
  2. Listen quietly while others are speaking.
  3. Be polite, courteous, and respectful at all times.
  4. No interfering with the teaching and learning of others.
  5. Keep your hands to yourself.
  6. Always Do Your Best
  7. Follow directions of all your teachers.
  8. Come to class prepared with all supplies and homework complete.

Recently, Federal Judge, Gene E.K. Pratter, made an interesting ruling that was fully reported on Law.Com

A lawyer who resorted to cursing and name-calling during a deposition has been hit with a creative sanction by a federal judge. Instead of imposing any monetary punishment, federal Judge Gene E.K. Pratter ruled that attorney Lewis P. Hannah must take a CLE class on “civility and professionalism” and also sit down for a meal with his opponent. Pratter said she was inspired by a quote from Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew”: “And do as adversaries do in law, Strive mightily but eat and drink as friends.” Full Story

Sounds like good advice! I wonder who will foot the bill for the dinner?
