Website Basics

This month’s issue is a basic overview of the most important features of your website. Websites can serve different purposes, from informative to generating leads, but these essentials will help improve business results.
- Look professional. Notice that I did not say unique, cool, artsy, fabulous, cutting edge, or fun. A good site should look professional and should not distract in any way from your service or product. You want people to be left primarily with your message. A more visually stunning site is acceptable but it not as important as a professional looking one that is easy to read.
- User Friendly. Certain basics such as your contact information and location should be instantly found on every page. Other things, like who you are and where you do business, are also crucial.
- Clear Call To Action. Tell visitors what you want them to do. Call, email, send a smoke signal, whatever. It should be clear and easy to figure out without too much reading.
- Info That Is Interesting To Your Customers. Listen to them and find out what they want and like. They may want more detail, more information, or less. You might be surprised!
- Good Spelling and Grammar. I harp on this, but my dad is a retired English teacher-what do you expect?
- Updatability. You need to be able to update the content on your site easily. Whether you do it yourself or pay someone else to do it is irrelevant but your site’s content needs to be accessible to you.
